UMS Book Fair
The idea of organizing book fair started in year 2008. On 28th July 2008, SCIENCETECH successfully organized the first Book Fair at Chancellor Hall, University Malaysia Sabah and it was launched by Datuk Llyas Ibrahim, Mayor Kota Kinabalu. The objective of the Book Fair is to cultivate reading interest in UMS student and provide a convenience way for student UMS to purchase reading materials at reasonable price.
The second Book Fair was launched at Chancellor Hall on 27th July 2009 headed by the president, Tey Chin Hong, a 2nd year exco from SCIENCETECH 2008/2009. The Book Fair was successful in terms of participation from UMS publisher, UMS Corporate, Dawama, Dewan Bahasa Pustaka, K-Enrichment, Blue-G-TV and Evergreen Sdn. Bhd. etc. The respond from public and also students were tremendous where approximately 4500 visitors attended.
Book Fair not only provides academic books but also children books, story books (fiction and non-fiction), educational toys, magazines, newspapers, dictionary and stationary. Book
Fair is targeted especially for the UMS student, Primary and Secondary school students and publics.
Furthermore, SCIENCETECH encourages students to participate in reading programs and activities to instil reading habits in the society. There are some concurrent activities
during the Book Fair such as Quiz Science, Sudoku competition, Speed Plus Plus competition, drawing contest, colouring contest, exhibition from UMS library, State Library and Dewan
Bandaraya Kota Kinabalu (DBKK), astronomy exhibition, Robocon exhibition, seminars and etc.
The Sudoku Competition during the 1st Book Fair has more than 300 participants where 100 participants entered as the finalist which was held on the last day of the event. This was
the climax for the 1st Book Fair. Meanwhile for the 2nd Book Fair, there are more than 50 students from the secondary school around Kota Kinabalu that have participated actively into
the Quiz Science which held within the three days event.
